11:40 AM - 12:10 PM | Case Study: Growing Climate-Resilient Meadows in BC's Semi-Arid Interior
CHRISTOPHER SZYMBERSKI, CO-OWNER AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNER, SEED & SPARROW DESIGN
As a small landscape design firm, Seed and Sparrow Design (SSD) has taken on the challenge of designing Climate Resilient Landscapes in the Okanagan Valley. Based on ecological principles, the landscapes that they design and build are self-regulating and function as a system. By layering complementary land management strategies and best practices, SSD creates landscapes that are dynamic, adaptive, and diverse. One component of this approach is the naturalized meadow - a dense and diverse matrix of both native and regionally appropriate plants that work in harmony to achieve a rich aesthetic experience requiring less inputs and resources over time when compared to conventional landscapes. SSD’s presentation will highlight the design, construction, and initial establishment period of a semi-arid meadow project. They will share the challenges, risks, and rewards of implementing a process-driven landscape that is not well understood in the Canadian context - and even less so in the semi-arid climate of the Okanagan Valley.

1:10 PM - 1:40 PM | Case Study: Plug-ins and Databases for Managing Building Areas
PETER HUGGINS, PRINCIPAL & MANAGING PARTNER, BHA ARCHITECTURE
BHA Architecture Inc. has a 30-year track record of delivering high-quality and functional architecture. Since the firm’s inception in 1990, BHA has successfully completed several large-scale resorts and a wide variety of commercial, mixed-use, and institutional projects.
Particularly in the city of Vancouver, area management has become a critical component of a rezoning and/or development permit application. Increasingly, clients rely on accurate area data to update their pro forma. Vectorworks has all of the tools needed to handle this task with relative ease. Within the context of a secured-market rental project currently in production, this presentation demonstrates the use of a customized plug-in object and several database worksheets to seamlessly manage building areas.

1:40 PM - 2:10 PM | Case Study: Restorative Landscape Design - BC Transit Handydart Nature-Based Solution from Ditch to Salmon Stream
SCOTT MURDOCH, PRINCIPAL, MDI LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS, INC.
The site of BC Transit’s new electric bus facility in Victoria was a highly disturbed site due to the construction of the island highway expansion in the 80’s. The site was used to dispose of excess fill and rock. A small stream through the middle of the site was realigned into an armoured channel. 40 years later, the channel was overgrown with invasive plants and was poor fish habitat. The design of the new facility required that the ditch be moved or piped under the facility. MDI helped convince BC Transit that there was value in rebuilding the stream with riffles and pools and that it could become an ecological asset. In addition to designing and overseeing the construction of the stream, MDI developed an integrated rainwater management plan that uses rain gardens to treat runoff from 100% of the proposed roof and parking surfaces. The stream was completed in the summer of 2022, and juvenile salmon and trout have already migrated into its full 250 m length. The project is the first Salmon Safe certified project on Vancouver Island.

2:25 PM - 2:40 PM | Modelling Specification Data
DAVID WATSON, DIRECTOR OF TECHNICAL SALES, NBS CANADA
Specifications are a core requirement of every commercial construction project. Where drawings are commonly generated by modelling software, specifications are traditionally generated independently. Today, digital links between specifications and your building model objects enable users to easily view every aspect of the built components. Consider this new paradigm that specifications can now be viewed as a non-geometric model representation of the qualitative requirements for products and workmanship.
